If more than eight horses are declared to run, the eight horses eligible to run will be determined by the following process:

If an individual owner has declared more than one horse, those horses will be eliminated. Following this the highest rated horse from each country (meaning the country a horse is trained in) remains in the race. Should this process produce less than eight eligible horses it will be repeated for the next highest rated horse from each country to bring the number of eligible horses to eight.

Eliminated horses may be declared as reserve runners. If more than two horses are declared as reserve runners the two horses with the highest GAG irrespective of their country will be selected.

If horses have the same GAG the horse with the higher prize money won since 1 January 2016 will remain in the race. If the prize money won is also equal the decision will be made by drawing lots.

If horses from more than eight countries are declared to run the horses with the highest GAG ranking from eight different countries will remain in the race. In this case the German horse with the highest GAG ranking has a guaranteed place in the race.

Horses running in the quarter finals are only entitled to prize money if they also run in the semi finals, as long as they are qualified. Horses running in the semi finals are only entitled to prize money if they also run in the final. This does not apply if a veterinary certificate is produced showing that the horse was not able to run.

The results of the Match Race-Cup will not from part of the racing record of horses. They will not be taken into account in the statistics for horses, owners, breeders, trainers and jockeys etc.
